April 5, 2025 In-person: Attaining the Next Level In Landscape Painting Workshop with John David Anderson

Join acclaimed Canadian Landscape artist and art instructor John David Anderson for an exciting opportunity to work at developing your own style and goals in a larger format.

Finishing a Large 'Moving Water' Landscape Painting

 

Focus will be on attaining the 'Next Level' in finishing a large landscape.
Have you always wanted to push yourself to work on a larger canvas? This is your chance to attain the next level in your painting.

John will provide a reference photo so you can prepare your work ahead of class and the in class focus will be on 'how to finish your painting'. You can also work from your own reference photo under John's guidance if you choose.

Before the class you will prepare your painting, including: underpainting / block in / painting darks then medium areas. Leaving lights, highlights and details to be worked on in class under John's guidance.

John will do demonstrations throughout the day. He will provide guidance on a 'one to one' to get you to the 'next level' in completing your work with confidence. John will provide participants with regular feedback on their respective paintings. There will be a valuable final critique of your painting at the end of the day for all participants.

Plus: If you took any of the previous OAG 'Next Level' Workshops on Nov. 16 or Dec. 7, you can bring in your finished painting for a 'one on one' critique with John David Anderson. 

Level: Open to all skill levels. Our experienced instructor will adapt his teaching style to his students’ experience.

The Orangeville Art Group presents its first ONLINE WORKSHOP!   Join acclaimed artist and art instructor Andrew Cheddie Sookrah for an exciting  exploration of the interconnections between colour, form, structure, depth and texture found in the Ontario landscape. 

Sookrah will begin the day with a review of the qualities of acrylic, colour, form and shape, then a discussion on brushstrokes. He will present an overview of the process of painting, the basics of colour, materials and thought process.  Using a layering technique of brushstrokes, you will learn how to create tonal values.  You will practice the demonstrated techniques to create a Canadian landscape painting. 

Andrew will guide participants through painting demonstrations and reviews of participants'  work with feedback and guidance throughout the day. 

Andrew will be demonstrating in acrylics but oils are also suitable for this workshop. 

Suitable for All Levels 

This course will teach artists to go beyond the obvious and truly explore movement, texture,  expressive line, vibrant colour and bring out abstracted shapes; whether beginners wishing to start developing a style of their own or established artists looking to refine their own practice.

Join acclaimed Canadian Landscape artist and art instructor John David Anderson for an exciting opportunity to work at developing your own style and goals.

 

Take advantage of this 2-part workshop to take your painting to the next level!

 

Begin or continue your exploration of how to observe and interpret the Ontario landscape to develop a vibrant painting in your own style.

 

Session 1 Attain the Next Level with John David Anderson November 16, 2024

 

John will begin the program with a short talk about composition, colour, texture and the use of materials.  Demonstration will focus on constructing a landscape using a layered technique beginning with the blocking in of all shapes. You can either work from your own reference or John will provide one.


During the day, participants will paint with one-on-one guidance on their progress. In addition we are offering an exciting opportunity for you to have a 'one on one' critique of one piece of your own work by a professional artist.

 

There will be a critique at the end of the day for all participants of the day's work. With this valuable information you can finish the piece during the next 3 weeks at your own pace and return on Dec.7 for a final critique of your work from today.

 

Session 2 Next Level in defining your own style December 7, 2024

 

Focus is on attaining the 'Next Level' in your paintings. You are encouraged to bring your own reference photo to work from under John's guidance. (If not, he will provide some photos for you to choose from.) John will do a short demonstration of a landscape painting in the morning. Throughout the day he will provide guidance on a one to one with you to get you to the 'next level' in your work with confidence.

 

John will provide participants with regular feedback on their respective paintings. There will be a valuable final critique of your painting at the end of the day of all participants.

In addition you are invited to bring in the painting from Nov. 16, for a 'one on one' critique.

Feb 25, 2023: How to Get the Best from a Photo to Make the Most Out of Your Painting with JohnDavid Anderson 

In this workshop, local artist John David Anderson is supplying the subject matter of a spring theme with references from where the scene was painted. This is a great colour study and interpretive exercise to teach you how to paint as if you were not painting from a photo reference.

This workshop is suitable for acrylics, oils or even watercolour and pastel… the principles remain the same.
